FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

At SedaCare, we believe that transparency and trust are essential at every step of care. We have gathered the most frequently asked questions from clinics, professionals, and families so you can clearly understand our sedation service and how we ensure comfort and safety in every procedure.

1. What is SedaCare?

SedaCare is a medical team specialized in sedation and outpatient anesthesia, operating directly in dental and medical clinics. With over 10 years of experience, more than 200 partner clinics, and over 1000 procedures performed, we provide a rigorous, safe, and humanized service.

2. In what situations is sedation recommended?

Sedation is recommended in cases of anxiety, extreme fear, dental trauma, long procedures, or patients with special needs (such as children, people with autism, or cognitive/behavioral deficits).

3. Is sedation safe?

Yes. All procedures are carried out by a team composed of anesthesiologists and specialized nurses, with continuous monitoring, following all national and international protocols and guidelines. Our commitment is to ensure clinical safety and peace of mind for both the patient and the team.

4. What is the difference between moderate sedation and general anesthesia?

Moderate sedation keeps the patient relaxed, calm, and responsive, maintaining autonomous breathing. General anesthesia, on the other hand, suppresses all patient stimuli: the patient is placed in a controlled coma and connected to a machine called a ventilator, which temporarily takes over breathing. General anesthesia is completely safe when performed in a hospital setting, but it is far more invasive and complex than sedation, with a slower recovery.

5. Is sedation suitable for children?

Yes, when properly administered. Sedation is widely used in pediatrics, especially for children with fear, phobia, negative previous experiences, or special needs. Each protocol is adapted to age, weight, and clinical profile. At SedaCare, we follow all the guidelines from the Portuguese Medical Association’s College of Anesthesiology, providing pediatric-trained teams for procedures performed in children.

6. Is there a minimum age for sedation in children?

Yes. According to the Portuguese Medical Association’s College of Anesthesiology, outpatient sedation procedures should only be performed in children older than 3 years. For children aged 3 to 9 years, these procedures must be performed by anesthesiologists with regular experience in pediatric anesthesia. At SedaCare, we have a pediatric team of anesthesiologists and nurses trained and experienced in pediatric care.

7. In moderate sedation, does the patient become unconscious?

They may. In moderate sedation, the patient maintains autonomous breathing and responsiveness. They remain calm and often have no memory of the procedure. At the end, they may feel like they remember everything but will have difficulty describing the events in detail, and the next day there is a high probability they will remember nothing.

8. How is recovery after sedation?

Recovery is quick. After the procedure, the patient remains under observation for a few minutes. Once stable, they return home accompanied, with clear post-procedure instructions and support if necessary.

9. Does SedaCare travel to my clinic?

Yes. The entire team and necessary equipment are brought to the clinic, without hospitalization. We turn any clinical space into a safe environment for sedation.

10. Is there an additional cost for the patient or clinic?

Sedation represents an additional investment but ensures predictability, comfort, and treatment efficiency. Each case is transparently budgeted in collaboration with the clinic.

11. How can I integrate SedaCare into my clinic?

Simply contact us. We assess the space, explain the process to the clinic team, and schedule the first procedures. There are no setup costs.

12. Does SedaCare train clinic teams?

Yes. We support each partner clinic with training on patient preparation, communication with families, and sedation safety, so the entire team feels confident in presenting the service.

13. What preparation is required before sedation?

Patients must fast, complete a pre-anesthesia questionnaire, and follow the instructions provided by our team. Safety always begins before the procedure.

14. Does SedaCare contact the patient?

Yes. There are at least two contact points:

  • 8 days before the procedure, the patient receives an email with all necessary instructions.

  • About 3 days before the procedure, a team member (who will be present on the day) contacts the patient by phone to review care instructions, answer questions, and provide case-specific guidance.

Additional contact may occur if needed.

15. Is there follow-up after the procedure?

Yes. After discharge, we provide post-sedation instructions and are available to answer any questions. Our commitment does not end in the clinic chair — we support the patient’s well-being until home.
